In light of the upcoming general election in the Netherlands, now seems a particularly apt time to revisit Matthiijs Rooduijn (of UvA’s platform for Democratic Resilience), Honorta Mazepus and Bert Bakker’s article exploring the extent to which Dutch voters value key attributes of liberal democracy.
Published on the eve of the 2023 Dutch general election, the article uses the results of a study into Dutch voting preferences to analyse the priority voters place on questions of democratic protection and the extent to which fundamental elements of liberal democracy have been drawn into a politicised cultural conflict. These questions are as relevant, if not more so, today than they were in 2023.
