In the past two decades, declines in democracy have affected all regions and many countries in the world, including long-established democracies. Understanding why democratic decay happens and how it can be prevented is of major societal relevance. The UvA’s interdisciplinary platform for Democratic Resilience (DEMRES) brings together researchers within the UvA that study the health of democracy. One of the ways this research is conducted is in the interdisciplinary research project on Identifying and Safeguarding the Normative Foundations of Democracy. This project aims to better understand the emergence, determinants, and strength of democratic norms among citizens and elites in Europe, Asia, and North America. In this way, the project aims to provide new insights on how we can make democracy more resilient.
